Quick answer · California structural pest control continuing education

California SPCB Applicators need 12 approved CE hours in their three-year renewal period. Field Representatives and Operators need 16 hours for one licensed branch, 20 for two branches, or 24 for all three branches. The required hours must include specific regulatory, technical, IPM, and where applicable general-education components. If your SPCB license expires in June, finish the required CE and submit renewal by June 30 of your expiration year. Current online renewal instructions require CE certificates to be uploaded through Connect.

24

Are you searching for California pest control CEUs to renew a structural pest-control credential? Start by confirming your license type. California’s SPCB rules distinguish Applicators from Field Representatives and Operators, and the latter two groups have additional branch-specific requirements. A course may offer useful instruction without supplying the exact SPCB credit your license needs.

Which California license and branch do you hold?

The California SPCB defines three structural pest-control branches :

1

Branch 1 — Fumigation

Structural fumigation with poisonous or lethal gases.

2

Branch 2 — General Pest

General household pest control, excluding structural fumigation with poisonous or lethal gases.

3

Branch 3 — Wood-Destroying Organisms

Control of wood-destroying pests and organisms, excluding gas fumigation.

SPCB Applicators perform qualifying application work for registered companies in Branch 2 and/or Branch 3. Field Representatives and Operators can be licensed in Branch 1, 2, 3, or combinations; Operators can also own or qualify a registered business. These license types are not interchangeable.

Do not confuse SPCB with CDPR: This page concerns structural pest-control licenses issued by the Structural Pest Control Board. California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) Qualified Applicator License/Certificate and other pesticide credentials follow separate rules. Check the issuing agency named on your credential before buying CE credit.

California SPCB Applicator: the 12-hour breakdown

For an SPCB Applicator renewing after the applicable three-year period, the Board publishes the following distribution of 12 approved CE hours:

Required subjectHoursWhat to check on your course certificate
Rules and Regulations4Approved SPCB Applicator rules-and-regulations hours.
Pesticide Use and Application6Approved Applicator pesticide use/application hours.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)2Approved Applicator IPM hours.
Total12 All portions must be satisfied; 12 unspecified hours are not enough.

A practical example: eight hours of pesticide topics and four hours of regulations would not automatically meet the requirement if the record lacks the separate two approved IPM hours. Match subject designation, not just total time. The SPCB CE page links to the Board’s approved Applicator-course list.

Field Representatives and Operators: Branch 2 and Branch 3 requirements

For Field Representatives and Operators, the required total depends on how many branches are active on the license. The following distribution comes from the Board’s current renewal table.

Branches heldTotalRulesTechnical B1Technical B2Technical B3IPMGeneral
Branch 1 only1684———4
Branch 2 only168—4—22
Branch 3 only168——422
Branches 1 + 220844—22
Branches 1 + 32084—422
Branches 2 + 3208—4422
Branches 1 + 2 + 324844422

Common structural example A Branch 2-and-3 Field Representative or Operator needs 20 total hours: eight Rules and Regulations, four Technical Branch 2, four Technical Branch 3, two IPM, and two General. A Branch 2-only license needs 16 hours, not 20. This distinction is easy to miss when comparing general “California pest CEU” pages.

Field insight: build a credit plan by subject

For a technician or supervisor planning a full recertification period, first list the required credit buckets, then select relevant pest-management education. For Branch 2 work, topics such as structural pest identification and treatment decisions have practical value—but only a course’s SPCB-approved subject designation determines whether its hours fill your technical, rules, IPM, or general requirement.

When is the California structural pest-control license renewal deadline?

The SPCB’s current instructions say licensees may begin renewal in May before a June expiration and should submit the renewal application and fee by June 30 of their expiration year. Missing June 30 triggers a delinquency period and fee; the license is not valid for work while delinquent. Licenses not renewed by September 30 are cancelled.

2026 example: For licenses expiring June 30, 2026, the Board’s May 2026 newsletter specified that qualifying CE had to be completed from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2026. That is an example of one renewal cohort—not a universal window for every California licensee. Check your own license expiration year in SPCB Connect .

2026 renewal-process change

Have your CE certificates ready to upload. SPCB introduced online license renewal through Connect for June 2026 renewals. Its current renewal instructions require CE certificates to be saved and uploaded during the online renewal application. Verify that the certificates show sufficient approved hours and the correct categories before you begin.

Can California structural pest-control CE hours be earned online?

Choose the individual course that is currently approved by SPCB for your specific license type and credit subject . The Board posts separate approved-course listings for Applicators and for Field Representatives/Operators. Do not treat a generic online pesticide-education listing—or acceptance by California DPR—as proof of SPCB CE eligibility.

1. Verify SPCB-approved courses

Use the regulator’s authoritative course lists and make sure the course title, approved hour value, and license audience match your needs.

What courses are most useful for Branch 2 and Branch 3 professionals?

Continuing education can improve field performance as well as maintain a license. For Branch 2, relevant education may include pest identification, inspection-based treatment planning, pesticide labels, resistance management, and communicating pest-conducive conditions to clients. Branch 3 professionals can benefit from wood-destroying-organism identification, inspection practices, moisture conditions, and treatment methods appropriate to the pest and structure.

These are educational topic examples, not representations of approved California CE categories . Whether a particular course earns Rules, Technical, IPM, or General hours depends on the SPCB’s approval for that course.

No. Verify that the individual course is approved by the California Structural Pest Control Board for your license type and required subject. Approval by another pesticide regulator or in another state does not establish SPCB credit.
