Lawn and Ornamental Equipment & Applications

When treating lawn areas application should include wetting of entire surface with no areas of over concentration.

When treating lawn areas its very important to make uneven applications to prevent leaving bands and other damage from over application

  Two Types of Lawn Application Systems:

1. Granular sprayers
2. Liquid spreaders

Rig – mounted tank sprayers work well when treating small surface areas such as flower beds.

When using Rig- mounted Sprayer PPE and mixing make sure to wear all protective equipment required by the product label to protect from pesticide exposure.

When calibrating the process with Rig- mounted sprayers make sure you measure an area of 500 square feet.

Granular spreaders can only be used in small areas.

When using a Granular spreader in a large area, you may choose to go with a hand – held spreader due to its ability to hold more product.

Improved granular application techniques will include:

1. Select the right equipment
2. Calibrating the application equipment to prevent streaking of pesticides

Importance of Calibration: All spreaders should be calibrated with the operator and the product being used.

When applying Ornamental Treatments most labels call for application to be applied directly to the plant.

Compressed Air Sprayers are best suited for large area treatments.

Ornamental treatments & weed control are two areas where compressed air sprayers can be used.

When calibrating a procedure for backpack sprayers:

       1. Add a specific amount of water to the sprayer

2. Spray the water as uniformly as possible to the point of runoff

3.Take the amount of water left in sprayer and subtract it from the starting amount in sprayer in the beginning

Spot treatment sprayers help control weeds in beds and landscaping.

Products must be applied correctly or the effects of misapplication of products may cost the company a significant amount of money for property damage or reapplication of product.

Product labels are of utmost importance in lawn & ornamental applications because the label is the law and must be followed accordingly.

Always use the recommended rates on the label when treating disease & pests because products have been extensively tested and approved by the EPA and are proven to work in the concentrations on the label.

Lawn mowing & pruning of ornamentals is as important as anything a L&O professional can do.
